    Description

The Flying B is the Jewel of our Ranches, we have something here for everybody and we aim to please!

Summer visitors enjoy hiking, day trips to the high country, fishing in the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Hot Springs and a store where you can buy all kinds of sundries, the things you ran short of or that were forgotten.

The Flying B Ranch is located on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, 38 miles southwest of Salmon, Idaho within the Frank Church Wilderness Area.

The ranch is at an elevation of 3,600 feet and has it's own 2,100 foot airstrip*. It has a lodge, nine cabins with fresh linens and indoor facilities and it's own hydroelectric power plant. Meals are served family style in the dining room. It can accommodate 40 guests and has a staff of 7 - 10 employees to help make your stay enjoyable and long remembered.

Activities include fishing, hiking, photography or just relaxing.

The airstrip at the Flying B is private thus, for non members, permission is required prior to landing. Permission may be obtained by calling the ranch office at (208) 756-6295. These are back country mountain airstrips so mountain flying experience is a pre-requisite for landing.

Go Around and Landing at the Flying B Ranch | Middlefork Salmon Idaho

Backcountry training with flight instructor Jim Hudson. My first attempt at a landing at the Flying B Ranch on the Middlefork of the Salmon River ending with a go-around due to too much energy and too high of an approach. The second attempt is a successful landing at a beautiful Wilderness ranch. Apologies for the bugs on the windscreen. We had just previously taken off from a grass strip with long grass. Enjoy!

Approach and landing at Flying B Ranch airstrip - PRIVATE (must call/email ahead) - in the Idaho backcountry with my Super Stinson 108-2.

This is a serene place that offers wonderful hospitality, food, and lodging. Hazards including density altitude, and valley / mountain weather. Please proceed with caution and make sure the weather is on your side. They offer a terrific breakfast for those who fly in. If you get a chance to go to the B, take it.

Also, please support the IAF and the RAF, as they aid in keeping these beautiful places open to backcountry pilots.

If you enjoy my clips, please let me know. Thanks
Filmed with a Kodak Playsport (sorry for the bad camera noise).

Landing and Departing Soldier Bar USFS Strip Idaho Backcountry in a RANS - 4K

Quick stop at Soldier bar. This can be challenging depending on your aircraft. Pretty easy in the RANS, I just try to keep the nose light over the woops and bumps etc. Always gets the heart beating a bit faster when you depart this one. Thanks for coming along, subscribe for more flying of all sorts - Idaho Backcountry, off airport on BLM in he Rockies etc.

      Idaho Backcountry Flying 2021

**4k Footage** August 2021 video of my son and I flying from Redding, CA to backcountry grass airstrips in Central Idaho; specifically Johnson Creek Airport and Flying B Ranch.

Johnson Creek Airport is a well maintained grass strip with comfortable camping amenities, and is right on Johnson Creek which is great for fishing and cooling off in the water.

Flying B Ranch airstrip is more remote than Johnson Creek with no roads in or out, requiring an airplane to access. Flying B Ranch has beautiful cabins to rent for overnight stays, and friendly staff. We flew in for breakfast only and took a tour of the grounds.

Contact Idaho Division of Aeronautics for standard procedures in and out of the fields and other airstrip information.

Cessna 185 | Taking off and Landing on a Muddy Jungle Airstrip

We fly our Cessna 185 into some of the most remote jungle regions in the Asian/Pacific. It is always a challenge to deal with weather and rain and properly evaluate airstrip conditions. This airstrip wasn't very wet for any of these clips. When it's really wet, one landing will sling mud from spinner to beacon and wing tip to wing tip. It's a short and soft field.

Idaho 2011 Flying B Ranch landing

This is an RV-4 approach and landing at the Flying B Ranch, June, 2011. Let down was done at full flaps and 80mph in a circle over the Bernard USFS strip to begin the approach up the creek. Our five RVs handled the stip well, which is well covered with grass and mowed. Use caution with low wing airplanes like the RV, as the mowed center of the runway is very narrow. The Flying B Should be phoned prior to landing, to allow planning for breakfast.
