    Description

The airstrip is about 10 miles upstream from the mouth of Happy Canyon, and sits on a bench at the base of a sandstone cliff. There are two intersecting runways, an E-W and a N-S. However, the North-South runway is overgrown and usable only by big tired STOL aircraft. Landing to the East is uphill 1.38%. The E-W runway is about 1380' feet long usable and there is about 680' of unusable runway on the West end that is overgrown. There are cones that mark the start of the good section, if they are still there. The runway surface is sand and gravel, and it is soft on the edges. Watch for cactus on the edges.

There is a great old miners cabin left over from the mining days, and there is lots of great stuff in there to look at. Old mining equipment, glass bottles, tin cans, some old clothing, etc. Please leave it all there. The Utah Backcountry Pilots Association has left some supplies for those in need. There is water for use in an emergency, a tarp, some runway tools, lawn chairs, a bbq (bring your own charcoal) and miscellaneous other useful things. There is a box of Tide laundry soap, but I can't figure out why.

Happy Canyon, UT - Approach and Landing (Utah backountry ) HD

Approach and landing to the east at Happy Canyon, UT airstrip in the Utah back country with my Super Stinson 108-2.

This is a old rugged mining airstrip - soft sand on the edges of the runway, but overall is in good condition year round. No facilities. Hazards including soft sand, short narrow runway, up to 2ft shrubs on edges of runway, density altitude, and canyon / mountain weather, windshear. Please proceed with caution and make sure the weather is on your side. Also, make sure your piloting skills are top notch, planes have crashed at airstrips such as this one.

Great Spot to camp! We spent two nights here next to the mining shack. Inside were a few chairs, some tools and business cards from folks visiting. The strip is pretty darn narrow and with the slight grade it can be pretty challenging to find the center. The winds on the second day were a direct crosswind and the canyon was a little rough on approach. The crossing runway was totally grown up with thick bushes. Not even suitable for 6" gear with 35" tires.

Canyon approach and landing on runway W at the Hite, UT airstrip in the Utah back country with a Super Stinson 108-2.

This is narrow, paved runway near the Hite crossing overlooking Lake Powell. No facilities (parking area and covered picnic bench which aids in a drop off and pick up point for rafters). Hazards include narrow runway with gradual slope, density altitude, canyon / mountain weather, and windshear. Please proceed with caution and make sure the weather is on your side. Also, make sure your piloting skills are top notch.
