Description
Big Rock Flat Airstrip is a backcountry strip situated on Umatilla National Forest land in northeastern Oregon at an elevation of roughly 4,392 feet.
The strip's name is an apt one. Frost heaving regularly pushes rocks to the surface, creating a notoriously rough rollout that has been compared to driving over railroad ties.
It is currently listed as closed and restoration of the strip has been an ongoing effort. The Umatilla National Forest has engaged with the backcountry flying community on the matter, and the Recreational Aviation Foundation has been working through negotiations with USFS land managers toward reopening it. Despite its condition, the strip is generally regarded as a low-risk backcountry destination with straightforward approaches, set amid scenic terrain near Madison Butte Lookout and Tupper Butte.
