    Description

Mica Creek airport is a now-defunct airstrip located in British Columbia, Canada. It sits in a remote part of the province, positioned roughly 30 miles from Avola, 35 miles from Blue River, and about 62 miles from Revelstoke. Its elevation is approximately 571 metres (about 1,873 feet) above sea level. Bigorre + 2

The airstrip carries no ICAO or IATA code — it was a small, local facility rather than a commercial or major regional airport. Because it is classified as defunct, it no longer has active aviation weather reporting (METAR or TAF), and pilots needing weather data in that area would look to Blue River airport or Kamloops airport instead.

The surrounding area is known for its dramatic mountain terrain, dense forests, and extreme remoteness. The Mica Creek region of British Columbia is most widely recognized today in connection with heli-skiing operations, which use helicopter access precisely because traditional ground and air infrastructure in the area is so limited.

Some remarkable and rare footage of the grand opening the Vernon airport on what is now Vernon Military Camp. A 2100' north-south runway and 2000' east-west runway, all grass field.

Local pilot Lowell L. Dunsmore is featured. So many faces to still identify.

      Aircraft identified attending the opening:

By far the largest and most spectacular for its day was the Ford 4-AT-E Tri-Motor (registration NC8403) of Mamer Air Transport, Spokane, Wash
      First flight: 1 May 1929
The aircraft while landing at Flat Airport Alaska on Friday 26 October 1934, ground-looped and the undercarriage collapsed and damaged beyond repair. The airplane was carrying a heavy load of tractor parts when it landed in crosswind conditions.
current: Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum. Possible restoration.

Fleet 2 (registration CF-ANL) Aero Club of BC,
      First flight: 21 Aug 1930
Lost control in cloud and spun into sea at mouth of Fraser River BC, 1 Nov 1936

Fairchild KR-21A (registration CF-AMI) Fairchild Aircraft to J Lynds to J Wade
      First flight: 22 July 1930
      Sold Feb 1947 fate unknown

      Travel Air 3000 (registration NC3824)
The Travel Air Model A was engineered chiefly by Lloyd Stearman, with input from Travel Air co-founders Walter Beech, Clyde Cessna, and Bill Snook and could trace its ancestry back to the Swallow New Swallow biplane. These men were pioneers in early flight in the 1920s and 30s and their names are immortalized on aircraft flying today.

Shreck (sp) Air Transport is likely a Buhl CA5 Air Sedan, this aircraft appears to have also been owned by Mamer (Spokane)

      NC199m Aeromarine-Klemm AKL-26A
      First flight: 1929
