Location Overview
Grasmere Airport sits in far southwestern Idaho along State Highway 51, in remote Owyhee County roughly a half-hour's flight south of Mountain Home and about 30 miles north of the Nevada border. The surrounding community of Grasmere is itself an abandoned service stop that once had a small gas station, bar and grill, and post office. The area is now home to a remote U.S. Air Force station staffed by airmen from nearby Mountain Home Air Force Base and the Idaho Air National Guard out of Gowen Field in Boise, which runs a military flight training range over the Bruneau Canyon just to the east. The setting is classic Owyhee high desert — sagebrush plains and open rangeland with few services nearby.

Camping & Recreation
There are no developed camping facilities at the airstrip itself, and the field is unattended with no fuel, no telephone, and no on-site amenities. That said, the surrounding Owyhee County backcountry offers dispersed camping opportunities typical of BLM land, and the nearby Bruneau Canyon and Bruneau River area is a notable draw for hiking, canyon overlooks, and river access for those willing to drive out from the strip. Pilots planning a fly-in camping trip should treat this as a true backcountry stop and bring all their own supplies, water, and gear.

Notes & Warnings
Grasmere is a single dirt runway (05/23), 2,750 by 150 feet, in fair condition, with edges and thresholds marked by white rocks rather than lighting. The FAA notes the surface may be poor at times due to damage from livestock, ground vehicles, and rodents, and there is no winter maintenance, making the field unreliable in snow season. Obstructions include a 4-foot fence near the runway and a marked 65-foot powerline about 900 feet down the centerline on the Runway 05 approach. The airport is open to the public but unattended, with no control tower, no airframe or powerplant service, and no bottled or bulk oxygen available. Traffic is left-pattern on both runway ends, and the CTAF frequency is 122.9. There are no published instrument procedures, so it's strictly a visual-approach field — pilots should plan accordingly and check current conditions before flying in, since it's genuinely remote with no phone service on the field.

History
Grasmere Airport was activated in April 1956 as a small public-use strip serving the Grasmere area, which at the time was a functioning highway stop with a gas station, bar, and post office along State Highway 51. As the town of Grasmere itself withered into a near-ghost town, the site took on a new life through its proximity to military aviation: the area became host to a remote Air Force station used by active-duty airmen from Mountain Home Air Force Base and Idaho Air National Guard personnel from Gowen Field in Boise, supporting a flight training range over the Bruneau Canyon just to the east. Today the airstrip persists mainly as a rustic, state-owned backcountry field — still shown on sectional charts and used occasionally by general aviation pilots exploring Idaho's Owyhee desert, even as the settlement around it has largely disappeared.
