Description
Cold Spring Guard Station Landing Field (also listed as Cold Spring USFS Airport, identifier US-8341) is a small, currently closed backcountry airstrip located near Post, Oregon, in Crook County — in central/east-central Oregon near the Ochoco National Forest.
The strip is officially closed, marked with a black X, and does not appear in standard flight planning software.
A 2017 inspection found the airstrip to have a large number of sizable rocks protruding from the surface, making it unsuitable for landing even bush-plane-type aircraft. The Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) is rumored to be working with the U.S. Forest Service to explore improvements.
Historical context:
The landing field is associated with the Cold Springs Guard Station, a Forest Service facility constructed in 1934 on the far end of Big Summit Prairie. It served as the main switchboard station connecting phone calls to and from fire lookouts and other guard stations in the region through the 1990s. The airstrip likely served as a Forest Service access point during that era of active fire management operations.
