    Description

Narrow runway, trees at both ends. Ditch runs parallel to runway on west side. Use caution when wet with a crosswind. Good short field practice strip in the Seattle area. Town is about a mile away, easy walk, island is hitch-hiker friendly.

    • Vashon Go-Around, Vashon Landing, Kitfox IV Speedster

Vashon Go-Around, Vashon Landing, Kitfox IV Speedster

Vashon Municipal Airport on Vashon Island, just west of Seattle; approximately 2000' long, grass surface, well maintained, fantastic little challenging spot. I had too much airspeed on my first approach, and executed a go-around. Could probably have made it, but why bother risking it. Second landing attempt was better but bounced it three times, so still had too much energy and not enough aft stick. There's nothing better than a grass runway for a taildragger.

Taking off from Vashon Municipal airport in the Navion.
I did do a performance check beforehand to see if we could get out and the numbers said it was going to be close. It was definitely tight but I think it made for an interesting video.

Quick Flight To Arlington (KAWO) | Ellie's @ The Airport | Pilot Review

Ask any pilot and they will tell you about their favorite places to get a $100 hamburger or pancake, Ellie's At The Airport is my favorite $100 Waffle!!

Flying for food isn't all we do in aviation, though it makes getting to your destinations that much sweeter when there's a great airport restaurant or onsite cafe. Arlington Municipal (KAWO) is a very special general aviation airport located northeast of Seattle, WA. This is a mecca for sport aviation, you can find everything there from vintage biplanes to jets, home builds, warbirds and ready-to-fly Vashon light-sport aircraft. If you haven't visited Arlington, you're missing something, and while you're there you can sample some of Ellie's great food, too!

    • Boeing Field Takeoff and Vashon Departure

Boeing Field Takeoff and Vashon Departure

Boeing Field (KBFI) in Seattle is surrounded by complex airspace, including Class B for KSEA, the big international airport that is just a few miles south. VFR traffic at KBFI is assigned standard departure and arrival procedures (for details see my blog: https://bruceair.wordpress.com/2021/06/02/new-vfr-procedures-at-boeing-field/).

This video shows the Vashon [Island] Departure, used for traffic heading west after takeoff. The procedure usually begins with takeoff from runway 14R. You climb straight out to 700 ft, and then make a continuous turn to close-in right downwind over the Duwamish River. As you fly abeam the Boeing Delivery Center and control tower, turn west to fly over the big school bus parking lot. You can then climb slowly, first no higher than 1000 ft and then no higher than 2000 ft to remain below the Class B shelves as you continue over West Seattle to the shoreline.
