    Description

Owned by the same folks that own 4Q7 (http://www.shortfield.com/index.php?option=com_jumi&fileid=5&Itemid=125&snum=01366.*A&initlat=39.65129111111&initlong=-120.43854416667)

Approach from the south, make right traffic.  Avoid overflying the white house off the west end of the runway.  Turn base prior to reaching the house.  The strip is is in good condition and is a great place for first time off-fielders.  Be mindful of density altitude, the strip is at about 5000 MSL.  Clear approaches at both ends of the runway.

Note that if you venture too far off the runway the ground gets rough and the weeds get high.

Amboy California Church - St Raymond (Part 2)

In part 2 of exploring Amboy, California, we’ll explore the abandoned church of St. Raymond. Situated next to Amboy Crater and Roy’s Café and Motel is the beautiful St. Raymond’s Church.

Purchase a scratch off map: https://theplanetraveler.net/products/world-scratch-off-map

At first glance, the church seems like any other church, but upon close examination, you can easily determine that the church has fallen victim to neglect. A visit here is warranted by anyone making the famous Route 66 cross country road trip, in addition to Roy’s Motel and Café. Exploring the abandoned church will take you back in time although you can tell that they have been doing some restoration.

In the second of a three-part series, we’ll take an in depth look in an attempt to explore and discover what happened to this beautiful little church; although, I have to admit that St. Raymond’s is a bit of a creepy church inside. Some might say that it’s even haunted. This small little town is loaded with relics waiting to be explored.

Definitely make it a point to stop in the ghost town of Amboy, California, the next time you decide to do a rt. 66 road trip to Southern California. In the meantime, please come along and explore with us as we make a travel blog about the beautifully abandoned church of St. Raymond.

    • Powering the Future: The Challenges of Building a 21st Century Electric Grid

Powering the Future: The Challenges of Building a 21st Century Electric Grid

The U.S. energy landscape is rapidly changing. As the cost of wind and solar power drops, allowing these energy sources to compete against coal- and natural gas-fired power plants, pressure is mounting to develop an electric grid that can sustain more renewables and deliver their power to more homes and businesses throughout the country.

In “Superpower: One Man’s Quest to Transform American Energy,” Wall Street Journal reporter Russell Gold chronicles one man’s mission to improve the U.S. electric grid by building a network of transmission lines to connect solar and wind hotbeds to areas of the country where demand for energy is high. Experts in the field broadly agree that this grid integration is the key to unlocking the clean, affordable grid of the future. The book provides deep insights on the challenges of achieving such a system and the opportunities ahead.

EPIC hosted Russell Gold for a special conversation with Michael Greenstone about “Superpower,” the characters and lessons it details, and the future of the U.S. electricity grid.
    • 10 Reasons You Should NEVER Move to Honolulu, Hawaii!

10 Reasons You Should NEVER Move to Honolulu, Hawaii!

From $900,000 run down huts to a complete failure of an education system, these are the reasons you should never move to Honolulu, Hawaii.

Subscribe for more videos like this!

      1. Natural Disasters
Nobody wants to die a horrible death in burning hot lava but that is exactly what can and has happened to Honolulu in the past. Although there’s no active ones right now, an eruption of one of the Honolulu volcanoes is possible at any moment. And if a volcano doesn’t get you, a hurricane might. Honolulu seems to be a popular stop for every single hurricane in existence. But the real killers are the tropical storms . These babies usually flatten entire cities with their insane power. Anywhere from 2 to 5 tropical storms hit every hurricane season, causing massive damage and hundreds of deaths. And since Honolulu is technically an island, you’re stranded if things get really really bad .

      2. Inconvenience
Everything in Honolulu is done at a snail’s pace. While it can be relaxing to spend a day at the beach chilling in slow-mo, waiting two months to get into a dentist for your toothache can be painfully inconvenient.

      3. Isolation
With 900,000 residents in the city, it might seem odd that anyone could feel isolated and alone, but the locals are much more welcoming of tourists and transplants. In fact, there’s an old saying that sums it all up...”If you aren’t a local, you never will be.”

      4. Crowded
Here’s the thing though, since the city is so crowded, you usually have to wait in lines to get anywhere. In fact, waiting in long lines is so common in Honolulu, it’s become culturally accepted. Restaurants, concerts, and events are judged by the length of their lines. If an establishment doesn’t have a line, they are probably out of business.

      5. Housing and Homelessness
With limited land and outrageously expensive housing, it’s no wonder homelessness is an issue. Over 3,000 locals are living on the street and another 3,000 are in homeless shelters.

      6. Expensive
The cost of living in Honolulu is 88% higher than the rest of the U.S. but the pay is below the national average. Most people who move to Honolulu are forced to downgrade their standard of living right from the get-go.

      7. Taxes
To make things even worse, Hawaii just announced they’ll be raising the state’s income tax to 16%. The highest income tax was previously held by California with their 13% income tax but I guess Hawaii now holds the trophy for the most thieving state ever.

      8. Bad Business
The high cost of living plus steep property rent and expensive labor make it near impossible to launch a company that will make you money. Now with complications from the pandemic factored in, Honolulu has become a ghost town for small businesses, especially new ones. If your business is in a regulated industry like hospitality, you’ll find a whirlwind of excessive rules and regulations await.

      9. Education
Education is a big problem in Honolulu. There are more private schools available per child than anywhere else in the U.S. because the public school system is a complete failure.

      10. Culture Shock
Another thing you’ll need to know is that if you’re Caucasian, you’ll be a minority that the locals refer to as a “Haole”. Don’t worry. You won’t be sacrificed at the stake or anything dramatic like that but you’ll definitely need to get used to living your new Honolulu life at the low end of the totem pole.
