Description
Location Overview
The airstrip sits on the grounds of the historic Rafter 7 Ranch in Lyon County, Nevada, in the sagebrush rangeland flanking the East Walker River south of Yerington, close to the California border. The setting is classic Great Basin high desert — open rangeland framed by low mountains, with the river corridor providing a green ribbon of cottonwoods and riparian habitat through otherwise arid terrain. The nearest town of any size, Yerington, lies roughly 15–20 miles to the north via a mix of paved and unpaved ranch roads.
Camping & Recreation
The strip itself has no facilities. It falls within the Rafter 7 Ranch unit of the Walker River State Recreation Area, one of five ranch properties (alongside Pitchfork, Flying M, Nine Mile, and The Elbow) donated to Nevada by the Walker Basin Conservancy. Formal camping infrastructure is centered at the Pitchfork Ranch a few miles away, which has two campgrounds, cabins, and a visitor center; the Rafter 7 section itself is currently open only for day-use activities such as hiking, hunting, fishing, and river access, with vehicles restricted to existing roads. Anyone flying in would need to arrange camping or lodging elsewhere in the park rather than at the strip.
Notes & Warnings
This is an unmaintained, informal ranch strip rather than a charted public-use airport, so pilots should treat it as defunct and not rely on it for routine operations. Expect a rough, unpaved surface subject to erosion, washouts, and encroaching brush typical of abandoned Nevada ranch airstrips, along with the possibility of livestock, wildlife, or debris on the runway. Density altitude, gusty desert winds, and a lack of any services, fuel, or communication facilities are standard hazards in this remote high-desert region. Anyone considering a landing should scout the strip visually first and confirm current land-use status with Nevada State Parks, since the property is now managed as parkland rather than a working ranch.
History
The Rafter 7 Ranch was originally developed as a large sheep operation, notably used for decades to raise a purebred Merino flock built on Australian genetics. The ranch encompassed roughly 3,000 acres with substantial water rights and miles of East Walker River frontage, making it one of the more significant agricultural properties in the Walker Basin. In the early 2010s the ranch was acquired by conservation interests as part of a broader effort to restore flows to Walker Lake, and it was later donated, along with several neighboring ranches, to the State of Nevada to create the Walker River State Recreation Area. Like many private ranch airstrips across rural Nevada, the airfield likely served as a practical way for owners, workers, and visitors to reach an otherwise isolated property before falling out of active use as the ranch transitioned to public parkland.
