    • Landsailing Compilation - Ibex Hard Pan Backcountry Airstrip

Landsailing Compilation - Ibex Hard Pan Backcountry Airstrip

Montage of our landsailing adventures on the Ibex hard pan backcountry airstrip in west central Utah. I perfect sailing day: great weather, good wind, and a stunningly beautiful location.

Featuring Lionel Stepp in his Class 3 boat, and some handheld footage of yours truly in my new Class 5.

      Ibex Hard Pan

Ibex Hard Pan, a dried lake bed in western Utah is great place to fly. I didn't touch my wheels on this trip so I wouldn't have to clean the salt off my undercarriage. I visited Ibex a few years ago and camped at the volcanic island that rises out of the salt. This year the island was surrounded on 3 sides by water, and the final side by mud.

Utah IBEX Dry Lake Bed Airstrip Back Country Flight

A back country flight with Luke Watters of OK3 Air out of Heber City, Utah. It was a great flight and lots of fun flying a Cessna 182 with glass cockpit. This video has some nice GoPro shots as well.

      Ibex 2018

With over 40 airplanes in attendance, the 2018 Utah Back Country Pilots Association Spring Fly-in was a blast. After lunch was served, only a few of us remained on the shores of the Ibex Hardpan. Here's a little snippet of how we spent our day in such a magical place.

      A little about Ibex:

Ibex Hardpan (also referred to as the Tule Valley Hardpan) is a dry lake bed west of the town of Delta in Central Utah. While there is no defined “runway,” pilots are suggested to use the dry lake surface south of the island as a landing surface, especially during large gatherings. A windsock has been placed atop the island as depicted to the right. Because of it’s nature, pilots are reminded that the condition of the landing surface varies with the weather, as well as the countless unmarked hazards such as watering troughs, wet areas, and springs that are scattered across the lake bed. A thorough inspection of the runway would be a great standard practice and is encouraged, however, keep the fly-bys over the landing surface and not the parked airplanes.

About the Utah Back Country Pilots Association:

The Utah Back Country Pilots Association was created in 1996 to help preserve and protect Utah’s premiere back country airstrips. These airstrips allow access to various areas of our great state, many of which inaccessible by other means.
