    Description

Gateway to the wonderful Everglades N.P.   Camping on the airfield is $12 per night or lodging a 15 minute walk.  Bikes can be rented for about $5 a day from the airport, or a bike for a day comes with purchase of avgas.   Meals and lodging available in town.  Getting there, walk, bike or many businesses will come and pick up pilots.  Next door to the Everglades Park visitor center.  At low tide, one can wade SE from the runway, or if you don't want to get wet, take the roads and sidewalk (circuitous but dry).

Tourism and fishing are this towns mainstays.  Opportunities are endless for kayaking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.  Bring the sunscreen, bug spray, and misquito nets.  Also bring your own tie downs if overnighting.  NO tiedowns currently avaiable as of Jan 2010.

Some resources still list the old CTAF, some list the new and correct- 123.075

Fly into Runways on the Water in South Florida - Everglades, Tampa & Venice

Some airports in South Florida are located right on the water for a tricky approach and a scenic view. Airglades Airpark is known for their Stone Crabs. You can rent bikes at the airport and bike through the small town to various restaurants in the area. Take your mosquito repellent though. Tampa is a beautiful city with a up and coming downtown area with restaurants and bars. Make Tampa an overnight stay and enjoy all it has to offer. Venice airport offers a shuttle service provided by a nearby beach restaurant for pick up and drop off.

Everglades Jetport (1969) remnant: a 2-mile runway (10,499x150 feet) to nowhere

Begun in 1968, the Everglades Jetport was to be a six runway airport for supersonic aircraft -- five times larger than JFK in New York and several times larger than any existing airport. Because of environmental concerns, construction was halted after the completion of just one runway which is now known as TNT -- Dade Collier Training and Transition Airport http://www.miami-airport.com/dade_collier.asp (Excerpt) The 24,960 acre property has approximately 900 acres of developed and operational land; the remaining area is managed and operated by the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission. Since its original configuration, the airport's most notable enhancements have been a runway overlay and lighting upgrade in 1992, costing $3.5 million, and taxiway rejuvenation in 1996, costing $100,000.

11/10/2009 - http://www.pavingparadise.org/blog/2009/11/10/tale-notorious-everglades-jetport-still-has-twist-or-two-go/ (Excerpts) In 1968, the [Miami-Dade County] port authority bought a 39-square-mile site just north of Everglades National Park and quickly built a training runway ... for easy access to the site from both coasts, the authority wanted a 1,000-foot-wide transportation corridor built from coast to coast. The corridor would include a new interstate highway, a high-speed mass transit system, even a "recreational waterway" for airboats and waterfoils.

However, a coalition of hunters, conservationists and citizen activists -- including, for the first time but far from the last in her long life, Marjory Stoneman Douglas -- defeated the jetport plan. They were aided in no small part by the first-ever environmental impact study, written by a group led by Aldo Leopold's son, Luna.

But that's the nature of the unnatural world of Florida. No development project is ever completely dead, not even the ones thought buried 40 years ago.

      ---
Perhaps it was inevitable that Dade County would propose to build the world's largest airport complex. Such a complex would serve the tourist industry, which in 1970 provided nearly 51.1 billion to the economy of the area (Davis, 1972). Businessmen for many years have advocated a policy of expanding tourism that naturally would require enlarging the aviation center serving south Florida.

As an alternative to enlarging the existing aviation center, the Dade County Port Authority began a search for a suitable location for a jet training facility late in 1965. The immediate need to supply a jet training facility, coupled with the outlook for additional traffic, suggested to the business community a need to create a large aviation complex to serve all south Florida. By September 1968, the Port Authority selected a 101-km2 (39-mi2) site in the Big Cypress Swamp shown in figure 1 - http://sofia.usgs.gov/publications/papers/pp1011/images/fig1x.jpg
