    Description

The Dixie Town airstrip is situated one block from Dixie's main street, about three miles northeast of the USFS Dixie airstrip. It's privately owned, but the owner allows landing at your own risk. It's open to the public, and adjacent amenities include the Dixie RV Park (with showers and ice available), plus a mountain cabin that can be rented sleeping up to 11 people. Pilots report it's a nice spot with a bed and breakfast serving food and friendly owners, though it offers less parking space than some other backcountry strips. Parking is available along the east side of the runway.

Key considerations for pilots: Hazards include rising terrain, density altitude, and mountain/canyon weather. Backcountry experience is strongly recommended before flying into either strip.

This landing was part of a 4-week adventure through Idaho and Montana. I’ll be sharing more of the standout strips over on my YouTube channel (please subscribe to this channel). I’m planning to put together the full trip story to post on my website by the end of 2025. Stay tuned!

Approach and Landing at Dixie Town, ID - airstrip in the Idaho backcountry with a Super Stinson 108-2.

Dixie Town is a wonderful place to drop in and enjoy the great people (the lodge has a great breakfast too). If winds allow, land Rwy 35 and takeoff Rwy 17 (I had about a 10kt tailwind on this landing). Also, Dixie USFS is about 4 miles to the SW.. Hazards include; rising terrain, density altitude, and canyon / mountain weather. Please proceed with caution and make sure the weather is on your side. Also, make sure your piloting skills are top notch prior to landing.
