Tsay Keh Dene Nation - Ingenika Protected Area

The Ingenika is of crucial importance to Tsay Keh Dene Nation historically, ecologically, culturally and spiritually. It is one of the last refuges in a territory devastated by the Williston Reservoir and unsustainable development. Tsay Keh Dene Nation are building an Indigenous Management plan for the Ingenika, work is ongoing and we need your help.

      Swannell River Airstrip Overivew

An overflight, low approach, landing, and takeoff on the Swannell River airstrip near Ingenika BC. The airstrip was in great shape. It's about 5000' of well packed gravel with good approaches. It does see some use by people on ATVs and 4x4s so a careful inspection must be made for any ruts they may leave. There are also a couple potholes that are harmless when dry (I taxied through a couple of them at 30 mph no problem) but when they are wet they will likely fill with water.

Fort Ware Air Service Now Charter Only

It is an hour's flight to reach the northern First Nations communities of Kwadacha and Tsay Keh, but getting there isn't as easy as just hopping on a plane. At least, not anymore.

      Clearing the Peace

      Date produced: 1970
Description: An historical look at the engineering program's clearing of the Peace River dam pondage area under what is now Williston Lake.

This production is one of a collection of historical films and videos that were digitized as part of the celebration of the centenary of the BC Forest Service in 2012. Digitization was done through a grant from the UBC Ike Barber Learning Centre and funding from the BC Forest Service Centenary Society.

This production is presented by the BC Forest Service for educational and historical reference purposes only. It represents the public policies, activities, technology and understanding of natural resource management at the date it was produced. It is hoped that by sharing these historical perspectives we can better understand the evolution in technology and knowledge that the BC Forest Service has experienced since 1912.

1966, W.A.C. Bennett Dam under construction, Hudson's Hope, BC

This footage was captured from the public viewing platform, a strategic highpoint offering an excellent viewpoint of most of the construction site and demonstrating the sheer scale of the massive project.

During his 20 year tenure,Premier Bennett was committed to the large-scale, state-directed development of British Columbia. Multiple projects across BC helped shape the province's future. None much bigger than the dam on the Peace River. Initially named Portage Mountain Dam, it would be renamed WAC Bennett Dam because the premier's vision played a major role in the project initiation, development, and realization.

Construction of the dam began in 1961 and culminated in 1968. At the dam, the Finlay, the Parsnip and the Peace Rivers feed into Williston Lake, also referred to as Williston Reservoir. It is the third largest artificial lake in North America.  At 186 metres (610 ft) high, it is one of the world's highest earth fill dams.

Not without controversy, the project displaced members of the Tsay Keh Dene First Nation. Aboriginal hunting and fishing grounds around the Fort Grahame and Finlay Forks areas were severely impacted by ecological change. In the process of creating Williston Lake, 350,000 acres of former forest land was flooded. This caused the loss of plant and wildlife biodiversity as well as risking mineral and timber rights. It continues to be the largest power station in B.C and it is the third largest hydroelectric development in Canada after Robert-Bourassa and Churchill Falls.
Thank you to the Hoy family for generously contributing this wonderful 8mm film reel.
