    • The Only Airstrip You're Allowed to Land at in Chugach State Park

The Only Airstrip You're Allowed to Land at in Chugach State Park

Today we’re flying Chaos Cub into Bold Airstrip near Eklutna Lake — one of the only legal airstrips inside Chugach State Park in Alaska.

This short backcountry strip keeps pilots honest with tight terrain, mountain winds, and very little room for error.

The Chugach Mountains form the dramatic backdrop to Anchorage and the surrounding communities, but because this land is protected, aviation here comes with strict rules. Pilots can’t just land anywhere in the park — only at a few approved backcountry airstrips.

Bold Airstrip is one of those rare places definitely keeps you honest.

Below the strip sits Eklutna Lake, glowing a deep sapphire blue on clear days as glacier water pours down from the high peaks of the Chugach. It’s one of the most peaceful places you’ll ever see from the air.

But this valley isn’t just beautiful.

For thousands of years the Dena’ina Athabascan people lived along the Eklutna River and the lake. Later, as Anchorage grew, the lake became a critical infrastructure — supplying much of the city’s drinking water and hydroelectric power. Those changes dramatically altered the river below, cutting off salmon runs that had existed for generations. Only recently have efforts begun to restore flow back to the river system.

Backcountry flying in Alaska offers some of the most incredible aviation scenery in the world. Flying a Super Cub into remote strips like Bold Airstrip requires careful planning, precise flying, and a deep respect for the terrain.
Today, Bold exists because of cooperation between pilots, land managers, and the aviation community — proof that responsible bush flying and protected wilderness can coexist.

Flying into places like this isn’t about convenience.

It’s about precision, respect for the terrain, and respect for the land.
      And when everything lines up…
this is exactly why we fly Cubs into the backcountry.

      Crave Life Episode 2

On todays adventure we depart Birchwood in the Citabria for one of the most beautiful lakes in Alaska.

Eklutna lake offers some magnificent views and incredible experience for outdoor thrill seekers. At the very end of it is a short air strip called BOLD measuring at 1000 ft long x 15 ft wide. The name of the strip does suggest the difficulty level when considering weather conditions.

It is often times extra challenging to make a successful landing there mainly due to the nature of the winds. On this arrival the winds were not favorable and tailwinds left very little room for error.

The disadvantage of landing from the other direction are tall trees that will result in 50% of the runway being unusable and a sharp embankment sloping down into the lake.

Enjoy the trip with us into Eklutna.
